Keep prices of new housing “within financial reach of ordinary local buyers,” says Action for Housing

‘Action for Housing’ says that the future construction of 900 ‘affordable homes for sale’ in three projects in the south district “is very welcome news and the Government is to be congratulated for spearheading these projects.”

These 900 flats will go a long way towards meeting the housing needs of our community, provided they are truly affordable, says the pressure group.

“We would therefore urge Government to ensure that the prices are kept well within the financial reach of ordinary local buyers,” said spokesman Henry Pinna.

“We must also point out that whereas well over a thousand homes for sale are to be constructed within the next three to four years, including those at Waterport Terraces, government has so far remained silent over their electoral promise to construct housing for rental,” the group says. And they add:

“We must remind Government once again that there is a great need for government rental accommodation to cater for those unable to purchase.

An early Government announcement involving the construction of flats for rental would be very good news indeed.”

Lastly, ‘Action for Housing’ says they must once again bring to the attention of the Government that contingency arrangements must be put in place, as a matter of urgency, to address cases of genuine homelessness. These unfortunate cases need to be addressed now, and cannot wait three or four years, by which time we shall have, hopefully, broken the back of our housing shortage.
