Gibraltar National Day 2007
National Day Statement by Keith Azopardi - Leader of the Progressive Democratic Party
On Monday 10th we will, once again, all have the opportunity of demonstrating our national sentiment, political and social unity and strength of feeling on issues of importance to Gibraltar.
Even though we have a new Constitution (Gibraltar’s new Constitution which came into effect on 2nd January 2007), this year is no different to any other in the sense that our right to self-determination remains under assault from Spain. Several instances during 2007 have made that clear not least Spain’s calls at the United Nations to achieve sovereignty over Gibraltar.
The PDP will not be convinced that there is a ‘new attitude’ in Spain until this is demonstrated by actions not words. This is our land and only the people of Gibraltar have a right to decide its future. When that is respected by Spain, consistently and without equivocation then we can talk confidently about a new climate of understandings between our nations. It is important to show our solidarity on these issues and to continue to express to the international community and our friends in the British Parliament that we remain determined to achieve international recognition of our rights. We seek the unqualified support of the United Kingdom Government in that struggle.
We hope you and your families will have an enjoyable National Day.
