Chief Minister Peter Caruana’s National Day Message

This year we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum in which we Gibraltarians decided massively that we wish to retain our British Sovereignty and our links with Britain.

I believe that that remains the firm sentiment of the vast majority of Gibraltarians.

It is therefore fitting that this should also be the first National Day after our new Constitution (Gibraltar’s new Constitution which came into effect on 2nd January 2007), under which we have established the very status and relationship with the UK that we want. One that marries the spirit of the 1967 Referendum with our self determination and our decolonisation.

The New Constitution achieves precisely this, enduring and enshrined British Sovereignty, recognition of our self determination and the maximum degree of self government compatible with our desire to retain British Sovereignty and close constitutional links with UK.

This new relationship is, as the UK itself has stated, ‘a modern and mature relation, not a relationship that can be described as being based on colonialism.

In so far as concerns our Sovereignty and status and our relationship with the UK, we therefore have achieved a constitutional relationship that meets all our various aspirations as a people – including not being in a colonial relationship.

Let us enjoy and celebrate these things.
