Cancer Research celebrate a very successful ‘Walk for Life’

Cancer Research UK - For Gibraltar Branch contact Telephone Myra Zayas - 79408The annual ‘Walk for Life’ organised by the Gibraltar Branch of Cancer Research UK resulted in ‘the best turnout ever’ this past weekend.

The Gibraltar Branch of Cancer Research UK reported that the event, which took place last Saturday 13th October 2007, resulted in a total of 1905 people participating in the ‘Walk’. The organisers categorised this year’s ‘Walk’, the tenth since its inception, as the ‘best ever’, exceeding the previous record, set last year, by just over 300.

People from all walks of life, including families and pets, participated in this increasingly popular event and cause in aid of cancer research and awareness. Government Ministers’ wives were present even though the event clashed with their husbands other duties as it coincided with the official ‘Swearing In’ of Members of the Gibraltar Parliament, elected only a day following the General Election result on Friday.

This year, although a total of 1,905 people officially registered with the organisers, Gibraltar Cancer Research estimate there may have in fact been well over 2,500 people participating. Although many did not officially register, nevertheless, many were sponsored and raised much valued funds for Cancer Research.

The ‘Walk for Life’ is not a competitive event. It is simply a four mile walk and people can either participate officially, by paying a £5.00 registration fee and be sponsored on their walk to raise funds for Cancer Research, or just join in for the fun of it. Many people used the event to commemorate loved ones who have passed away because of this dreadfull disease as their way of highlighting the very dibilitating effects cancer has on the community.

Participants made their way from all over the town to pack Casemates during the morning, whilst they registered and gathered for the four mile walk. The great turnout was met with praise from Officials from Cancer Research UK, who were in Gibraltar to oversee the event.

Accompanied and supervised cheerfully by the Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP), the St John Ambulance and the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, walkers set off from Casemates at 11am as scheduled. The first Walkers completed their four mile course within 16 minutes, with many cheerily enjoying their walk at a more leisurely pace, enjoying the day and the bright weather conditions.

The Gibraltar Branch of Cancer Research UK have thanked everyone who took part for making the event such a successful one.

Fun and activities day in Casemates Square… without your car

Filed under: , , , , , , , Forums Chat and Discussion Groups, Gibraltar Lobby and Focus Groups — Gibraltar News Online @ 11:03 am

European Mobility Week - Let’s Get Walking!

European Mobility Week - Let's Get Walking! In Town Without My Car Steering Committee have declared the week of 16th – 22nd September 2007
The In Town Without My Car (ITWC) Campaign will be running an information and activities day in Casemates Square this coming Saturday.

ITWC launch European Mobility week at the Piazza - September 2007
This will be the culmination of a three month long In Town Without My Car Campaign.

Today, the ITWC Steering Committee is once again calling on everyone in Gibraltar to give up their car for this one day.

A spokesperson for the Steering Committee commented:

“The In Town Without My Car campaign is a positive campaign that aims to encourage the use of alternative forms of urban transport – the bicycle, the bus and walking – rather than relying on the car or motorbike.

Cyclists commute to work across Airport runway road during In Town Without My Car Campaign which run between June - September 2007
Cars and motorbikes are an essential part of our lives and the campaign recognises this. But on many occasions in Gibraltar there are times when we get in the car or on the motorbike by default for journeys where we could easily use another form of transport. In fact many times walking, cycling and using the bus can be faster than waiting in traffic jams or endlessly circulating to find a parking space.”

The ITWC steering committee say this is the only day that this campaign “calls on everyone in Gibraltar to give up their car for one day”.

“We are encouraging people to stay in Gibraltar and rediscover our town on foot or on the bicycle.

Eat out locally, visit or revisit local tourist sites, take a ride on the cable car or a self made rock tour on the buses which will be running free of charge all day long. Take a trip up the newly refurbished Med Steps, take a walk with friends, go for a picnic, or go for a cycle. There is plenty to do in Gibraltar for family and friends that does not involve the car or the motorbike.”

This Saturday 22nd September 2007, the ITWC steering committee will be running an information and activities day in Casemates Square. Stalls and stands with information on walking, cycling and the buses will all be available. There will be children’s activities, street theatre, and information films. Members of the committee will be on hand to talk to members of the public to discuss the campaign and ideas about transportation in Gibraltar.

In the ITWC statement today, the Steering Committee noted that the information and activities day has had to be move to Casemates because apparently the Government has “not formally responded to a request for the south end of Main Street to be closed to traffic”.

Nevertheless, the ITWC Steering Committee invites everyone to join them ‘In Town Without My Car‘ this Saturday 22nd September 2007 at Casemates.

Saturday also happens to be World Car Free Day.

Jazzing it up at the O’Callaghan Eliott Hotel Gibraltar

Filed under: , , , , Gibraltar Lobby and Focus Groups — Gibraltar News Online @ 4:06 pm

Thursday Night Jazz nights at the O’Callaghan Eliott Hotel Gibraltar

Last Thursday saw the welcome return of Juan Galiardo on piano joining the George Posso Jazz Trio with George on double bass and Charlie Rovegno on drums.

Thursday Night Jazz evenings at the O’Callaghan Eliott Hotel have become very popular and last Thursday was once again well attended with the Veranda Bar packed and all seats taken up by the mid session with only standing room available.

Almost a 'big band' of musicians and complete brass section with Chuck McClelland, John Levy and Nicky Gonzalez on tenor saxes, Rik Lanyi on trombone, Mitch Jansen on trumpet Jazzing it up at the Thursday Night Jazz night at the O’Callaghan Eliott Hotel Gibraltar - 28 August 2007 - Picture courtesy of Gibraltar Jazz Society
The crowd were treated to a fabulous session by an almost big band of musicians with a complete brass section with Chuck McClelland, John Levy and Nicky Gonzalez on tenor saxes, Rik Lanyi on trombone, Mitch Jansen on trumpet accompanied by Steve Izzard on guitar. The tenor saxes, trombone and trumpet aided an abetted the superb quartet of Juan, Steve, George and Charlie.

The first set opened with just the trio of Juan, George and Charlie who played ‘I’ll Be Seeing You‘ and ‘I’ve Never Been in Love Before‘. The rest of the musicians soon joined in with a great rendition of ‘Autumn Leaves‘ when Mitch Jansen gave his trumpet a rest to add some lyrics to the tune.

Chuck McClelland was in good form and threw in a number of fantastic sax solos, much to the delight of the appreciative audience, inspiring the rest of the crew with Mitch hitting those high notes on his horn and John and Rik adding some classy phrasings. Juan had to hit hard on the ivories to keep up with the brass section’s volume level and did so with much style with his usual colourful manner of playing.

Chuck featured on a magnificent version of a Charlie Parker tune entitled ‘Confirmation‘ followed by ‘Nostalgia In Times Square‘ with Juan once again hitting hard on the ivories and Mitch adding his magic touch on trumpet all to a warm applause.

Old crooner Dennis Mander was soon on the scene celebrating his birthday and expressing his joy as he sang a bluesy Georgia‘ to wild applause.

As always, the session ended on a high note with ‘St Thomas‘ with the crowd shouting for more.

The recent Latino’s Diner jazz night featured Maria Cavaes on vocals with special guest Chuck McClelland on tenor sax. Atsuko Shimada was on piano for the evening with Juan Sainz on drums and George Posso on double bass.

Chuck certainly added spice to the evening with his smooth phrasings and Maria giving a superb performance as always, with the added bonus of the splendid trio backing them.

The evening was brought to an end with a song made famous by Roberta Flack entitled ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love‘.

This Friday there will be no live music at Latino’s Diner but there will be another live session on Friday 14th September featuring Tito Chipolina and Brian Torres.

Help Gibraltar’s environment with the ESG’s “Clean up the World” Weekend 2007

Filed under: , , , , , , , Gibraltar Lobby and Focus Groups — Gibraltar News Online @ 2:56 pm

• “Clean up the World” Weekend • 15th and 16th September 2007

The Environmental Safety Group are once again organising Gibraltar's Do you care about the way we treat our environment? If you do… then you will be pleased to hear that Gibraltar’s Environmental Safety Group (ESG) are once again organising Gibraltar’s “Clean up the World” Weekend… and they need your help!

For the past two years over three hundred Gibraltar residents have taken up the challenge of cleaning up difficult to reach green areas and underwater sites as part of a mammoth global Clean up the World campaign.

Up to 50 tonnes of rubbish was cleared up by 350 highly energetic volunteers during this year's "Clean up the World" weekend organised by the ESG - 16th and 17th September 2006
Both years the volunteers have collected close to 50 tonnes of rubbish!! Last year the Gibraltar Government also dedicated resources towards Gibraltar’s CUTW campaign, collecting 150 tonnes of rubbish from long established illegal dumping grounds.

The “Clean up the World” Campaign started in 1989 when an Australian solo-yachtsman and builder, Ian Kiernan, disgusted with the amount of rubbish he came across while sailing, organised a clean up of Sydney Harbour. Today the dedicated weekend sees 35 million people from over 120 countries taking action over the weekend.

The Environmental Safety Group registered Gibraltar in 2005 to take part in this inspiring cause and is once again organising 2007’s clean up… which promises to be even bigger and better than its predecessors!

This years’ event falls on the 15th and 16th September. Gibraltar will see a busy cleaning up weekend launched with a parade and environmental exhibition in the heart of town. As in previous years, there will be a special theme. Clean Up the World 2007 centres around “Our climate, our actions, our future”, which describes how local actions can spread globally.

Many people may think that removing rubbish alone will not solve anything, say the ESG. They believe that these high profile clean-ups are important for a number of reasons. Green areas and our marine environment will obviously benefit from the removal of ugly and potentially dangerous junk. The need to change negative behaviour and attitudes has to be addressed by spreading awareness and showing that the community cares; better facilities for rubbish disposal need to be provided, and then, of course, their use enforced. Clearer guidelines to the public for specific rubbish disposal will also help reduce much of the illegal dumping which takes place throughout Gibraltar.

These issues continue to be raised by the ESG and by an ever-growing number of concerned citizens. Recycling, for example, has to be set up in Gibraltar. This not only rescues materials which can be reprocessed into valuable commodities but also instils a sense of value in the objects we buy and throw away daily, often with little regard. The link between these actions or inaction and climate change is clear. The more waste we produce the more we need to get rid of either through landfill, reprocessing or via the incinerator. All this involves lots of energy, which in turn produces more greenhouse gases, resulting in global warming.

Other projects in keeping with CUTW objectives of cleaning up, fixing up and greening up the environment are also being developed with “Green Watch” running for its second year. This project was started by Westside Comprehensive School students, who carried out studies on Gibraltar’s changing landscape during the Clean Up weekend. A conservation project with Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society (GONHS ) is also planned with removal of invasive weeds on the eastern slopes.

Preparations for these and other projects are now well underway. Coastal and land surveys have already been carried out, identifying litter hotspots in a number of locations.

Volunteers

Generally, the ESG has been overwhelmed by the response from the community so far. Clean up the World is the time to put all our differences to one side and work together as a community to help create a healthier and safer environment. Will you be there??

The ESG need your help!! If you are able to help in any way please call the ESG on 43156, 74467 or 71020 or email esg.gib@gmail.com.

The first group planning session is on 17th August at 8.00pm at Plater Youth Club top floor. Please call or email the ESG beforehand to inform them of your intention to attend – thanks.
